Characterization Process Writing Assignment
It was the birthday of a classmate, and someone witnesses (or some people witness) a mean trick being prepared for (or being played on) the birthday boy.
Story
“Look at these!”
“Wow!” everybody exclaimed.
“Ain’t I just too pro?” Tim inquired as he pointed at his collection of trophies from various sports contests and mathematic competitions.
A number of answers came from the big crowd in Tim’s house that went “Just too pro”; “Wonderful” so on and so forth.
“Look at this! I got this by getting first in the whole school, even the ‘oh-so-great’ Matthew could not beat me, right?” Tim boasted in front of everybody. All his friends went cheering wildly except for Matthew, who sulked angrily at a corner, staring at Tim.
Suddenly, Tim shouted out through the house, “Who would want a MacDonald milkshake?” Tim’s best friend, Caius, raised his hand at the speed of light. Free nice drinks, that was why everybody liked Tim, or either he was too clever and could
help them in their homework.
Before long, the crowd gathered together to sing the birthday song to celebrate Tim’s eleventh birthday. Caius stood on one side of the table as he sung the birthday song to his best friend when he saw Matthew whispering something to Michael in a corner. After ending the song, Caius enquired the two twin brothers, “What’s up?”
“What?” The two brothers questioned Caius in union.
“The thing that you two were discussing just then. What was it about?”
Matthew answered rudely, “Shoo! Mind your own business.”
Caius opened his mouth, wanting to say something, however, he shut his mouth up when Matthew and Michael stared at him both angrily and annoyingly. He knew it was best not to offend them as they would treat him badly. Thus, Caius walked off briskly without looking at the two brothers.
Matthew said to Michael quietly, “Okay, Tim made fun of my name as the ‘oh-so-great’ Matthew. As my younger brother, you should help me get my revenge, right?”
Michael nodded quietly.
“I have thought of a prank, which is to ruin the birthday cake of his. Isn’t it wonderful?” Matthew smirked while speaking softly, hoping that nobody overheard his conversation.
“Brother! It is too mean! Today’s his birthday!”
“So? You think I would give in? No way! He made fun of me, you heard it! You said you hate him so much, so, why don’t you team up with me and humiliate the ‘oh-so-great’ Tim? This is a very good opportunity to play a prank on him.”
“That is very bad! I think I must report you if you do so!” Michael said in an unexpectedly loud voice that startled Matthew, but nobody else was able to hear it.
“Fine! You win!” Matthew said furiously.
However, Michael knew that his brother as a sarcastic character, thus he told Caius about the mean trick. Caius was bewildered when he heard the mean trick. A birthday being ruined! He had two choices, either to let the trick go on and harm his best friend or to hide the cake. However hiding the cake would make the cake topple as it was too warm for the cake. Caius did some fast thinking on the spot when he suddenly thought of replacing the cake after the cake was destroyed. The problem was to gather money for the replacement for another cake. Thus, Michael and Caius went around hunting for money from all of the friends there.
“It totals up to $37.50. I believe it is more than enough to buy a cake.’ Caius murmured to himself.
They rushed out of the house to the nearest bakery for a birthday cake. When they reached the bakery, they pointed at the most presentable cake. The shop assistant asked, “Ordering it? Come two days later to take it if you want to order it.”
“Buying it right away,”
“You cannot do that! You can only order it.”
“Please... We need it very urgently,” Michael pleaded sincerely.
“Fine then. But I cannot help you write the name of the birthday boy or girl as I need lots of time to do so. The cost is $37.”
Without hesitation, Caius gave the assistant $37 and ran off with the cake. Michael trailed behind, occasionally stopping to rest. Nevertheless, they came back before the cake-cutting ceremony started. They swapped the ruined birthday cake with the new cake they bought in the fridge. They then went out of the kitchen quietly, trying not to look suspicious.
Soon, the cake-cutting ceremony started. Matthew volunteered to take out the cake, seeming to be very excited to do so. When Matthew took out the cake from the refrigerator, he was coughing to suppress the excitement of seeing Tim being both horrified and sad because of the ruined cake. However, when he opened, it was very different from the ruined cake. Tim instantly asked, “Why does the cake look so different?”
Michael stammered, “Erm... Ur...”
Caius suddenly said, “Oh! The cake that you bought was toppled very badly, so I bought for you another cake. I’m really sorry.”
“Don’t be guilty. It is a nice looking cake. I love the design of this cake. It looks appealing to me. This is the best present I’ve received in this year, because it is from my best friend. Let us begin the ceremony,” said Tim soothingly
Both Michael and Caius heaved a sigh of relief and went on with the party, leaving Matthew angry of his unsuccessful trick.
